Drawing upon similar artists album work

http://www.cocoon.net/svenvath

This is the artist website and album artwork of Sven Vath, frankfurt based DJ who is also signed to cocoon records the same as our artist Maetrik. We can draw upon his album artwork for inspiration in designing the digipack for our artist because the two artists conjure up similarities in their music and style, and in particular with relation to the planned style of our music video this album cover draws upon man ray like themes. We can draw upon this in terms of colour scheme and style, however due to the nature of our track we would make our digipack look more underground and edgy.

This is a screenshot taken from his website, it provides a more colourful angle on his promotional art. If we decided to go in a more contrasted colourful foreground on a dark background direction then we could draw on this example of a similar artists expression of his image and genre through digipack.

This is another example of a different style of Sven Vath's album cover design if we decide to take the digipack in a more retro style without the use of colour. The common theme between all of these covers is that they all feature a portrait, ours draws on this theme but in a different style with ideas of a pair of glasses and a Man Ray image in the reflection of the lenses.

This is a fourth example of a direction our album cover artwork could take in creating a more rebellious underground artist image through the use of stencil grafitti on a public derelict wall.

Profiling the target audience for our Campaign

In order to profile our target audience for our music video campaign we need to look at the JICNARS scale and VALS, values attitude and lifestyles system. Our song is a techno, trance genre song which generally appeals to a younger audience. On the JICNARS scale the younger generation generally will fall into the lower level areas such as skilled manual, junior management etc and a few from class B in middle managment like teachers and junior doctors. However the clubbing scene style of our campaign will attract an audience from class A and above as they have the highest disposable income and can afford to go to the high cost celebrity clubs.

The VAL system is ideal for the psychographic profiling of the audience for our campaign.

Target Audience for Artist

http://soundcloud.com/cocooninthepark/maetrik-the-reason

The Primary audience for this artist is young, european techno lovers. This is because his music is a heavy electro techno trance genre, its also shown by his playing at amnesia Ibiza a well known young persons party which he was hired to perform, this clearly shows his popularity among young ravers. A secondary audience could be homosexuals as this style of techno trance is typically popular among homosexuals.

Meeting with Dan Set Designer

  • We've cut out the toilet, bar, narrative characters, mirrors, masks and dj sets in order to maintain focus voyeurism and the people watching and on the plastic sheeting with the mine in the middle lit up by dark pink and blue lighting.
  • We've kept the influence of Man Ray as a key theme and maintain a focus around creating each shot as powerful imagery.
  • We'll still use shots from inside the plastic and outside the plastic, through the scenes we've decided on outside the plastic.
  • We've decided on a dancing room to be staring in on the plastic, ideas for the costumes they wear in this room are gorilla costume, wedding dress, fish nets on head, bondage gear.
  • Another room on the outside is the entrance room, which is decorated plush and poshly with red velvet.
  • The whole floor of the club will be breathing, through the use of an inflatable black spikey floor.

Set Design Sketches

These were our preliminary set design sketches, they consist of the DJ set with the plastic either side dripped in water and colours, a closer shot of the plastic and the man ray picture theme we're driving towards, a birdseye view of the plastic and the rooms inside and out, the lips sofa with the man ray back drop and the purple room with mirrors. They each also contain ideas for shot types and camera positioning.

Evaluation of Animatic Storyboard

The process of editing the animatic storyboard allowed us a starting look into editing footage to our song in preparation for our Music Video.
On top of this it showed animated our paper storyboards and showed us how they would look not only with the music but when working in a series of clips.
Animating storyboards is important because otherwise you have to try and mentally picture each individual drawing as part of a sequence playing to the music.

We started by uploading all the clips we filmed of the storyboard and putting them to our song we uploaded.
Whilst playing it through we used the marker tool on final cut pro to mark in the beat on the sound file so that we had a begining of where to edit into.
We then used final cut pro to cut between each storyboard picture on the beat of the song, slowing it down and using the arrow keys to ensure that the cut is precisely on when the beat comes in.
The snapping tool was very useful in this as we could find the beat and place a marker then take the clip we wanted and using snapping get it perfectly lined up with the edge of the previous clip.

Why is Storyboarding important?

A Storyboard is vital to allow the director to visualise the flow of camera shots through means of a graphical representation using captions to describe the basic details. It is as a planning tool to give the directors a clear understanding of what shots they need to shoot on the day, we have used this as a key element in our planning of our music video for example inside the club we sketched out the shots we wanted, a mid two shot, and drew them into the set which was further explained in the details. This allowed us to have a clear pictorial guide on what our shot would look like and how it would relate to the other shots in a rough sketch. The Storyboard then allowed us to discuss with regards to how the video would be directed and the direction of photography within the video. This is a vital tool in the music video process, particularly for the shots that we plan on editing back into through use of a green screen or special effects so that we know exactly what shot we need from the day of shooting to edit into to get the end shot we want.
Storyboards are used in each element of production. In Pre-Production storyboards are used to plan the feel and overall mood of the video by planning out the costumes and set and seeing how all the elements of each shot works without the added details of lighting, camera movement and action yet.
During Production copies of the storyboards are handed out to every member of the crew so that everyone has the same idea of what shots need to be created on the shoot day.
In Post Production the storybaord is used as a visual reminder of what shots were filmed and in what order, it is particularly important in the editing of videos that use special effects.

What is Storyboarding?

A storyboard is a graphical version of the series of shots shown in the music video with captions that describes the location, action, camera direction, lighting and sometimes simple dialogue. The Director uses a storyboard to plan the shots he wants to use in his music video and to make sure that the shots work in a sequence together to create a successful music video. It is an essential planning tool prior to and on the day of the shoot for compiling in a simple fashion all the shots.
